Poor posture is a problem for people of all ages. Who amongst us doesn’t slouch in the chair at work or overload pocketbooks, backpacks, laptop bags and other shoulder bags, all of which can have a negative effect on posture?

Good posture is important no matter how old you are, but it is particularly pivotal that positive posture habits be taught to children as soon as possible. Like with anything else in a child’s life, bad posture habits can lead to a lifetime of posture difficulties and the nagging aches and pains that come along with poor posture.

Parents can help their children develop good posture by encouraging them to participate in posture exercises such as sitting up straight at tables and in chairs and stretching the shoulder and other arm muscles. Urging children not to sit in the same position for more than 30 minutes and to walk barefoot whenever possible—feeling their feet on the ground helps children practice proper posture—are also underrated posture exercises.

The best posture exercises are often athletics. Swimming is largely recognized as the most successful way of building and maintaining good posture, because all of the body’s large muscles are used and posture is improved as the muscles are strengthened. Other activities where the athletes are in constant motion—such as basketball, running and soccer—go a long way towards improving posture.

Parents can lead by example, improving posture by participating in these posture exercises with their children. And, posture exercises are a great way for parents and children to bond. Just make sure to keep a close eye on children’s backpacks to make sure they aren’t too heavy, and consider investing in an ergonomic kneeling chair that will be beneficial for and improve the posture of everybody in the house.
